Private Member's Bills

A Private Member's Bill is a legislative bill, or proposed new law, that is introduced by an individual MP and not part of a government's planned legislation.

As an independent MP, I support proposed legislation that I believe will benefit the people of Mackellar, Australia and our environment. I have introduced my own Private Member's Bills on important issues that the Government is failing to address.

My 'ending jobs for mates' Bill aims to address the culture of cronyism and party friendly appointments that undermine our democracy. The jobs-for-mates culture in Australian politics wastes taxpayer money, leads to poor outcomes and decisions, and erodes trust in government.

My bill would ensure that major public Commonwealth appointments are made independently and transparently and no longer left entirely to the discretion of a minister, and ensure that appointees are of the highest quality and expertise.

My Healthy Kids Advertising Bill 2023 Bill aims to protect children from junk food marketing by removing ads from TV and radio between the hours of 6 am and 9.30 pm and banning them on social media and online outright. Broadcasters, internet services and food companies that break the rules will face substantial fines.

As a doctor and parent myself, I believe it is time we took action to stop the predatory targeting of our children by junk food companies. We are facing rising childhood obesity and chronic disease, estimated to cost the health system $11.8 billion every year. Being bombarded with junk food advertising from a very young ages is simply not in the best interests of our children and industry self regulation is patently not working.

My bill, which is seconded by Independent MP and former paediatrician Dr Monique Ryan, also has the support of the Australian Medical Association (AMA), Dietitians Australia, Diabetes Australia, the Cancer Council, the Food for Health Alliance, the Public Health Association of Australia, The Royal Australasian College of Physicians and The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
